These Mauser rifles were originally issued to front-line military units during active service. Following their primary deployment, many were transferred to police forces and reserve military units for continued use in auxiliary roles. In these secondary capacities, the rifles were often modified by their individual users—resulting in a wide variety of configurations. No two examples are exactly the same, reflecting both the practical needs and personal preferences of their handlers. Common differences include bolt style, removal of sight hoods, missing or replaced buttplates, and significant variation in stock type and wood grain. These rifles reflect a practical, user-driven approach to maintenance and customization, with each example telling its own story of extended service and adaptation.
The Zastava M48 is a post World War II Yugoslavian version of the Belgian designed M24 series rifles with some influence from the German Kar98k. This was the standard service rifle of the Yugoslav People's Army from the early 1950's until its replacement by the Zastava M59/66, a licensed copy of the Soviet SKS semiautomatic carbine, in the early 1960's. The M48 was produced from 1950-1952, has all machined steel parts, and comes with full crest on the receiver.
