In WW-II, the Soviets developed the RPD LMG. Designed to fire the powerful M43 intermediate cartridge and going up against tough-as-nails competition, the RPD was eventually picked as the clear winner after a series of competition trials. V.A. Degtyarev designed the RPD and based it on his successful DP LMG. Degtyarev was able to replace the DP pan' mags by a belt-fed system that used 100x round belts because of the the ammo being lighter, significantly increasing the firepower of Soviet ground infantry.
