Barrel Twist Rates & How They Affect .223 / 5.56 Accuracy

1-in-7 Twist Rate

This is the twist that the U.S. military has chosen since the M16A2 was introduced in the 80's. You can find the 1x7 twist on the M4 carbine (like the CR6920), the HK416, the M16A4, as well as the Mk12 Special Purpose Rifle. This twist rate is chosen by the military because it can better stabilize tracer rounds during flight.

This barrel can stabilize bullets up to 90 grains. It can also handle 70 to 77 grain bullets at pretty much any velocity. This makes it well-suited for carbines with shorter barrels. The 1-in-7 twist definitely the best choice if you are looking for a Mil-Spec clone.

While it won't guarantee perfect accuracy, matching the rifle's twist to the right ammunition will help ensure that the bullet is stable in flight. A bullet too heavy to match the twist of your barrel is a way to guarantee poor accuracy and ineffective performance at the terminal. You should ensure that your ammunition is properly matched to your barrel's twist if you are having trouble with accuracy in your modern sporting rifle.

1-in-8 Twist Rate

If versatility is the name of the game, the 1-in-8 twist is a great choice for a general-purpose carbine measuring 16 inches. The twist rate is good enough to stabilize bullets up to 80-grains. The 75 & 77 grain bullets work well at a wider range of velocities, so barrel length doesn't matter as much. The 1:8 rate is also great for not OVER stabilizing some of the lighter ammo that you can utilize. 1-in-9 Twist Rate

The 1-in-9 twist rate is a great "middle ground" between lighter and mid-weight bullets. It's not too fast to cause problems for 55-grain bullets but it's fast enough to stabilize any bullet under most circumstances. This twist will stabilize traditional bullets up 77 grains and monolithic rounds up to 70 grains. This twist is more flexible with longer barrels at faster velocity.
