Childers Guns Layout guide for Polish UF blanks with transfer punch
Childers Guns LLC is a manufacturer of firearms specializing in custom AK47 Receivers, AKM Receivers, AK74 receivers, Tantal receivers, and other parts and accessories.
Childers Guns - Polish Underfolder Layout Guide
This Layout Guide provides LEFT AND RIGHT center punch for:
- Front Trunnion Rivet holes
- FCG
- Center Support
- Rear Trunnion Rivet holes
- Rear Underfolder holes
This jig will allow you to use a 1/4" Transfer punch to center punch all the holes listed above (Left and right side of a Polish blank).
It will work for a 47 or a 74 blank.
These are made of machinable plastic, they are not a drill guide. They are designed to be a layout guide.
Use a 1/4" Transfer punch, not a standard / tapered center punch.
The Layout Guide is designed to align with the front and top of the blank. It is designed to mark the locations of the FCG and Center support holes on both sides. Drilling is performed on each side, not all the way through the blank.
Before you start
Use a ¼” transfer punch, not a tapered center punch
Do not use as a drill jig. The drill bit will wander and ruin the Layout Guide and the blank.
Don’t mark the holes with a lot of force while using the Layout Guide. After you have removed the Layout Guide and inspected the markings, use a punch and make them larger / deeper to better center your drill bits.
Drill bits needed: 5/32" or 4mm, 7/32" or 5.5mm, 5mm, 7mm, 10mm (We suggest you purchase 2 or 3 extra 5/32” and use them to pre-drill all larger holes)
Pre-drill larger holes with a smaller drill bit
Mark Ejector side (Left side looking at back of Blank, X and Y stamps will appear on this side)
Layout Guide alignment:
The engraving Top ^ indicates the Top of the Blank
The engraving Front > indicates the front of the receiver
Insert the wood spacer provided in the blank between the top rails and the lower rails (Lower rails should be spot-welded in before marking / drilling the FCG and center support holes) this is to provide some support while marking.
Lay the blank on a flat surface with the Ejector side facing you and the Top of the blank DOWN
Place the Layout Guide against the blank with the engraving pressed against the blank. (Engraving of ChildersGuns.com)
The Top ^ should be DOWN against the same flat surface that the top of the blank is laying on
The Front > should be even with the front of the receiver. Use a good flat straight edge to verify this
Use clamps to secure the Layout Gide to the blank making sure that the Top and Front of the receiver and Layout Guide remain aligned An assistant here is a good idea, one person holds the jig and maintains the alignment, while the other applies the clamps.
Once you are sure that the Top and Front are aligned you can begin marking
Use a ¼” transfer punch to mark:
- Selector
- Trigger
- Hammer
DO NOT mark the Selector Notch, this is used to locate the front of the slot on the Operator side only
Mark Operator side (Right side looking at back of Blank, Selector markings will appear on this side)
Lay the blank on a flat surface with the Operator side facing you and the Top of the blank DOWN
Place the Layout Guide against the blank with the engraving facing out. (Engraving of ChildersGuns.com)
The Top ^ should be DOWN against the same flat surface that the top of the blank is laying on
The Front > should be even with the front of the receiver. Use a good flat straight edge to verify this
Use clamps to secure the Layout Gide to the blank making sure that the Top and Front of the receiver and Layout Guide remain aligned
Once you are sure that the Top and Front are aligned you can begin marking
Use a ¼” transfer punch to mark:
- Selector
- Selector Notch
- Trigger
- Hammer
Use a transfer punch, not a tapered center punch
Remove the clamps, Layout Guide (Leave the wood support in if you wish to punch the markings deeper)
Ejector Side Drill Sizes:
Selector - 5mm (Pre-Drill with 5/32”)
Trigger - 7mm (Pre-Drill with 5/32”)
Hammer – 7mm (Pre-Drill with 5/32”)
Center Support – 5/32”
Operator Side Drill Sizes
Selector – 10mm (Pre-Drill with 5/32”)
Selector Notch – 7/32” (Pre-Drill with 5/32”)
Trigger - 5mm (Pre-Drill with 5/32”)
Hammer - 5mm (Pre-Drill with 5/32”)
Center Support – 5/32”
On the Operator side, the selector notch is formed by removing material between the 10mm Selector hole, and the 7/32” selector Notch hole
