The AK74 rifle was chambered in 5.45x39mm and first entered military service in 1974. The AK74 and 5.45x39mm cartridges offered greater accuracy and range than the AK47 rifles that were 7.62x39mm. In 1986, the Romanians introduced their version as the Pusca automata model 1986 (Automatic Rifle Model 86 or PA md. 86. The ROMARM Arsenal manufactured these rifles in Cugir, Romania. This variant is known as the AIMS-74. CUR-2, WUM-2 and the WASR 2 are acceptable export names.

There are many unique characteristics that make the AIMS 74 rifle easily identifiable. The most obvious difference is the angle of charging handle. It is inclined upward, or "upswept" as it is commonly called. Next would be the barrel profile and gas block. Instead of the 22 mm Soviet-style barrel journal, the Romanians used 23 mm barrel journals. Design and the front sight base are also different. The site post's protective ears are shaped in a u-shaped shape, instead of the circular design seen on Soviet pattern AK-74s. When attaching the bayonet, the bayonet lug can also be positioned so that it works with the 22mm muzzle device. The Soviet pattern uses a different Bayonet location and a 24mm muzzle device. The magazine release and the selector lever design are also subtle variations. The rare and collectible Romanian aims-74 variant is a unique item in the Kalashnikov group.
